Knee Pain

Knee pain is one of the most common presentations in the clinic and is multifactorial in nature. Some underlying factors that may contribute to knee pain include patella abnormalities, muscular imbalances or weakness leading to patella misalignment, overuse injury and ligamentous injury.

When evaluating the knee it is important to consider that the knee contains a complicated network of muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues that contribute to the structure of the joint, alongside bursae, neuro-vascular structures and lymph nodes. All of these elements are capable of contributing to one’s knee pain.

Some common cause of knee pain include:

  • Bursitis

  • Tendinopathy

  • Patellafemoral Pain Syndrome

  • ITB Syndrome

  • Osgood Schlatter’s Disease (age dependant)

  • Chondromalacia Patellae

  • ACL / PCL injury

  • MCL / LCL injury

  • Meniscus injury

  • Baker’s Cyst

  • Arthritis

Management of knee pain is highly dependant on the diagnosis, severity and goals of the patient. Common medical managements for knee pain may include corticosteroid injections, PRP injections and in some cases, surgical intervention. Many of the conditions listed above however can be effectively managed through conservative means, which include osteopathic treatment and tailored clinical exercise.

Most knee complaints will also benefit from a proper shoe fitting. The biomechanics of the foot directly influence the knee and can greatly impact the ground reaction forces being distributed up to the knee and hip. A specialist sneaker store will often assess your gait on a treadmill and provide advice surrounding the correct shoe for you. This is often a recommendation for conservative knee pain management, especially for those you parttake in walking or running activities, or are overweight.
