Foot & Ankle Pain

The foot and ankle is an extremely important component of the musculoskeletal system responsible for movement. The ankle is composed of the lower portion of the tibia and fibula, and the talus of the foot. Your foot is made up of 26 bones, 33 joints and over 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments, all designed for weight baring & force distribution.

Foot & ankle pain is a common occurrence and can be due to a large number of factors, often associated with load baring. Some causes of foot & ankle pain include:

  • Ligament Sprain

  • Stress Fracture

  • Achilles Tendinopathy

  • Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Plantar Fasciitis

  • Arthritis

  • Sever’s Disease (age dependent)

  • Heel Spurs

  • Retrocalcaneal Bursitis

  • Morton’s Neuroma

  • Bunions

Osteopaths are able to assess the foot & ankle to provide a diagnosis for your pain and an appropriate management plan. They will also screen other areas of the body, as problems with your feet & ankles may result in pain or injury further up your body such as your knees, hips or back.

Osteopathic treatment can be effective in managing many of the above causes of foot & ankle pain. We will use a variety of techniques such as soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation &/or manipulation, dry needling and taping to address the findings of your assessment, and help minimise your pain. Osteopaths are also able to give clinical exercises & advice for at home management to help get you back on track sooner.
